Robben
Island
|
During the apartheid years Robben Island became
internationally known for its institutional brutality. The duty
of those who ran the Island and its prison was to isolate opponents
of apartheid and to crush their morale. Some freedom fighters
spent more than a quarter of a century in prison for their beliefs.
Departing from the V&A Waterfront travel by speedboat to the
offshore island and spend the morning learning about this important
part of South Africa's dark past. A must-do for those wanting
to really know what went on in the apartheid era.

Garden Route
Elephant Feeding
Experience
|
Tucked into the lush forests of the Garden Route that were home
to wild elephants as recently as 1970, we visit a sanctuary
where these magical beasts are protected and allowed to roam
their natural terrain unhindered by civilisation. After a brief
4by4 ride we are taken to an area with six or more African elephants,
with buckets of fruit and veg in tow! These awesome animals
stand as high as 3.5m, but will gently take food from your hand
with their gigantic trunks. Not many people ever can get this
close and personal with one of the greatest creatures to walk
the earth, it is an experience not to be missed.

Cango
Caves
|
The
Cango Caves are regarded as one of South Africa's foremost natural
wonders. They owe their origin to a geological fault in the Swartberg
mountains, known to the San as the Kango. Water, time and chemistry
have combined over hundreds of thousands of years to create a
castle of carved caverns, corridors and dripstone formations deep
within the mountainside. The largest of the chambers is the Grand
Hall, 107 metres across and 16 metres high. The intricate calcite
stalactites and stalagmites range from the miniature to the massive,
many of them with picturesque names such as Lot's Wife and the
Organ Pipes.
Experience the African underworld on a two hour hike through the
maze of crystal-covered caves, working up a good appetite before
enjoying a picnic in the Grand Hall.
